AUTOMATIC CARS

Why Automatic?

Why not? For a long time UK car drivers have stuck with the belief that we need to drive manual cars while the USA have for a long long time used automatic. However, as Bob Dylan sings " The times are a changin! "

Modern day automatics no longer have huge sacrifices in performance, fuel economy and driving enjoyment. These qualities can actually be enhanced by going automatic. No need to change gear if you don't want to and if you do, most cars will allow manual control over gears but with no clutch.

Happy days

Automatic Controls

In the centre to the left of the steering wheel we have the centre console.

At the bottom you will see a gear lever. This is to select, Park, Reverse, Neutral or Drive.

In front of the steering wheel we have various dials, Speedometer, Rev Counter, Warning Lights and Fuel/Temperature.

Look at the steering wheel, imagine a clock face and place your hands 10 to 2.

Now your hands are positioned to drive here's the exciting part about driving an automatic car.

There are only 2 pedals;
On the right we have the accelerator (the long one), we call that the gas pedal. By applying gentle pressure the car will speed up and as this happens gears change automatically. By coming off this pedal the car will start to slow down as we are no longer sending fuel to the engine and gears will change automatically according to our speed.

Next to that we have the brake pedal (the wide one), this also helps us slow down and stop.
